For nearly two centuries, Little River United Methodist Church has served as a beacon of faith for the Woodstock community. From its humble beginnings in the 1830s to its vibrant present-day ministry, the church’s history is a testament to the longevity and service of those dedicated to Christ.
A Foundation of Faith (1830s – 1850s)
The history of Little River began alongside the earliest roots of Methodism in Cherokee County.
- The Log Church Origins: Organized around 1830, the original church was a hewn log building located near Evans Bridge on Little River.
- Moving to the Current Site: In 1839, John Posey Winn deeded 12 acres on Old Alabama Road (now Highway 92) to the church trustees. This land remains the home of the church and its historic cemetery today.
- The Historic Sanctuary: In 1854, the congregation erected a new frame sanctuary made of hand-dressed North Georgia pine for a cost of $300. This structure remains the main body of the sanctuary used for worship today.
A Legacy of Community and Service
Little River has historically been more than a place of worship; it has been a center for education and fellowship.
- The School on the Hill: For roughly 50 years, starting in 1891, an elementary school building stood on the church property. Generations of local children were educated here until the schools consolidated in 1940.
- The Camp Meeting Era: For decades, the church hosted annual week-long camp meetings every August. Families would “tent” around an arbor, attending four daily services called to order by the blowing of an ancient antelope horn.
- The Fellowship Hall: Built in 1954 by the hands of its own members, the Fellowship Hall became a hub for church dinners, scouts, and community groups, further cementing the church’s role as a servant to its neighbors.
A Growing Beacon in Modern Woodstock
As the Woodstock area transformed from a quiet railroad stop into a thriving city, Little River continued to grow and adapt.
- Full-Time Service: In 1971, the church entered a new era of full-time ministry. Throughout the 1970s, it was recognized as one of the fastest-growing churches in its district.
- Continued Ministry: Today, the church remains active through diverse programs such as the Women’s Ministry, Men’s Ministry, the “Christ’s Kids” children’s program, the Youth Fellowship, and the Little Food Bank – a 24/7 food pantry.
- A Multi-Generational Community: LRMC is a vibrant, multi-generational faith community serving the people of Woodstock and the surrounding areas.
In 2021, Little River Methodist Church (LRMC) disaffiliated from the UMC and now functions as an Independent Methodist Church.
Little River Methodist Church stands today as a living bridge between Woodstock’s pioneering past and its dynamic future, continuing to serve as a faithful witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
